The Asbury Church Project
The Asbury Church Project started in May 2024 when there was a structural failure within some of the support beams in the center of the building. It took some amount of time to understand the amount of damage sustained as well as the scope of the renovation works necessary to stabilize the building but also to create usable space going forward.
Phase 1
Scope of Project
The Asbury Project is a multi-phased renovation project which is foundationally covering 3 important elements; (1) the renovations to the Asbury Church building itself and will also include the Pastor house next door, the Cemetery, and most importantly Asbury Members, including their ancestors and future legacies.
This phase included controlled and safe demolition work and included removing an estimated 4 tons of debris; e.g. walls, ceiling, old wiring, plumbing, sheetrock and plaster, etc. essentially giving us a full view of the 'actual' to properly renovate the building to a safe status for occupying the building. We determined importantly that all infrastructure needed replacement or upgrade (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) and that interior perimeter walls would be needed to structurally support the sanctuary. In addition, 5 new main beams are required (including code compliant concrete footers) as well as structural cabling.
Phase 2
Demolition and Rebuilding

This phase also includes; (a.) addressing legal ownership, (b.) negotiating with and assessing needed contractors and 'special deals' and any required Rockbridge County Code requirements. This also includes strategic thinking about the future of the Church
Phase 3
Fundraising and Communications
Our initial outreach will include 3 Press Releases, 2+ News Articles, and an extensive mailing effort to our Community and Media outlets. This phase also includes elevating the role of the Asbury Trustees to guide current and future efforts and funding, development of outside property, the cemetery and all related work to develop the Asbury Church and surrounding properties.

The Future in our Community
The role of the Trustees will be to maintain the building and property going forward. In addition, and more importantly, it will be to help integrate the Church and this newly created space back in to the Community.
